Shanghai
Theatre Academy,
formerly Shanghai Municipal Experimental Drama school,
is a higher art institution which nurtures theatre specialists
in China. It was founded on December 1, 1945 by the reknowned
dramatists Li Jian Wu, Gu Zhong Yi,
Huang Zuo Lin, etc and the famous dramatist Xiong
Fo Xi had been the President for a long time. It was
changed into Shanghai Municipal Drama school in October 1949 and
during the adjustment among institutions of higher learning in
1952, the school was combined with Drama Department of Shanghai
university and the Drama Group of Shanghai Xingzhi Art School,
obtain its name East China Branch of Central Theatre Academy.
It got its present name in 1956 and was moved to 630 Huashan Road
from Sichuan Road (north). In 2002, it agglomerated school of
Performing Art of Shanghai Teachers’ university, Shanghai Traditional
Opera school, Shanghai Dance School and has become a comprehensive
art academy in traditional Opera, ballet,
China dance as well as spoken drama
and film and television. It
offers schooling and degrees from middle school to 3-year college
education, under graduate, MA and Ph.D. It has been extended in
various disciplines.
During the past 57 years, Shanghai
theatre Academy has nurtured over 7000 specialists in drama, traditional,
opera, film, television, fine art, literature and journalism,
many of them being the backbone of China’s theatre, film, television
and fine art, including the first generation of the minority spoken
drama and film and TV actors in Tiber and Inner Mongolia.
Shanghai theatre Academy
has undertaken further educational reforms to meet the need of
cultural development and to raise the standard of teaching. It
has added 3 new faculties: TV Art, Broadcast
and TV Editing, Announcing and Hosting and Art
Design since 1993. It has revised the curriculums for
all specialties and has opened almost 100 optional courses. It
lays great emphasis on the management of teaching while at the
same time pays treat attention to the quality of teaching.
“Theatre Art”, the academic journal of Shanghai Theatre
Academy, enjoys a high prestige in the national theatre art. The
Academy has set up a further education center, aiming at continuing
education for art practices both professional and amateur.

992 Shanghai Theatre Academy (proper), including 532 undergraduates,
206 3-years college graduates, 35 post graduates, 50 overseas
students; 312 Traditional Opera and Dance Branch; 426 Traditional
Opera School and 387 Dance School. Total number of students: 2047.

etc.

These are good facilities in Shanghai theatre Academy, to include
Experimental theatre, Black Box Theatre Lab, New Experimental
Space and small Theatre, best suited for teaching, performances
and rehearsals. The school library houses a good stock of books
and periodicals on theatre. Student’s apartment, The Dancing Hall
and the gym provide students with excellent living facilities.
The campus on Lianhua road is the venue for Traditional Opera
and Dance school and Traditional Opera school with high-class
rehearsing hall and performance space.
Shanghai Theatre Academy has established extensive international
cultural exchange programmers, inviting overseas experts to teach
and direct plays in the academy and at the same time sending teachers
abroad as visiting scholars. The school’s performance and teaching
groups have been to Singapore, Japan, Britain, Italy, Germany,
the United States, South Korea, Belgium, Romania, Hong Kong, Taiwan
and Macao for visits and cultural exchanges. International Symposiums,
International Shakespeare Festival and International Experimental
Theatre Festival have also been held. The academy has established
cultural links and co-operations with numerous overseas universities
and organizations. Students from over 50 countries and regions
have studied in Shanghai Theatre Academy. It has enjoyed good
international prestige.
Shanghai Theatre Academy has achieved unique characteristics in
teaching, professional training and academic activities over the
past 57 years, and has developed various disciplines in theatre,
film and television, practical art and so on. It boasts a group
of talented and devoted teachers. Traditional Opera and Dance
School, founded in 1999, has achieved good results. Traditional
Opera School and Dance School possess a group of talented teachers,
who have nurtured many excellent professionals in traditional
opera and dance and many of them have won international and national
awards.
Shanghai Theatre Academy will develop its potential and follow
the principle of education. “Look the world, look to modernization

a first-class and high-quality comprehensive university of theatre
